Lightning Returns: Skyrim and Tits

Today, SankakuComplex, a known source for Japanese news, published an article about Square Enix’s latest update on their working title, Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns. Seeing as how the site also has quite a good bit of NSFW goodies, I’ll have to do a bit of copy and pasting here (unless you like goodies), so bear with me on this one.

In their latest interview with Famitsu, one of Japan’s leading video game magazine companies, the director of Lightning Returns, Motomu Toriyama, and a lead designer, Yui Umeda, explained their plan when starting Lightning Returns.

Umeda: The wilderness is designed with a natural open world style of play in mind.

Toriyama’s first instruction was “beat Skyrim!”

That may be a tall order with the resources on hand, but as this is FF we decided it might be best to approach it by letting you run about on a chocobo.

Also, although there is lots of freedom in the wilderness, there is only one goal but with many paths to accomplishing it.

Square Enix has made it a goal to overtake Skyrim in terms of general popularity. While being financially successful, Skyrim is well known for being, well, boring when compared to previous Elder Scrolls games. Sure, you could mod it on the PC, but vanilla Skyrim was rolled back in terms of mechanics for the more general, casual audience. Overtaking Skyrim would be hard to do financially, but gameplay wise, that’s not saying much.

So what will help Lightning Returns outsell Skyrim? A better overworld with more prominent landmarks? A gripping, original story?

Of course not! Square Enix has taken the cop out strategy once again and decided to just give Lightning bigger tits to supplement their Lightning dress up simulator.

According to SankakuComplex, the interview quickly shifted to what seemed to be the more interesting topic of the change made to Lightning’s lady lumps. Lightning has been confirmed to have gone from a C cup to a D cup, making quite a number of people butthurt and horny at the same time. Combined with Lightning Returns’ outfit changing combat system a la Final Fantasy X-2 and it looks like Lightning has been turned into a dress up doll by Square Enix to the dismay of Final Fantasy XIII fans. The Japanese fans in particular have reacted to all of this quite harshly as seen in some select fan feedback nearing the end of the article.

“Like they can manage Skyrim.”

“There is no way this can compete with Skyrim as they say.”

“I think they are confusing their ‘open plains’ from XIII with the ‘open world’ of Skyrim.”

“I’d love to see just what part of this game they have deluded themselves into thinking could compete with Skyrim.”

“Skyrim was overrated anyway. It was only really good because you can mod it up.”

“With those comments Umeda is basically saying one small part of the game is somewhat comparable to an open-world RPG.”

“If they were saying this about XV I might think they were serious, but it is obvious they long ago gave up making anything of Lightning Returns.”

“Other than the cuteness of Lightning they really have nothing to beat anyone with.”

“I wish they’d stop dragging out Lightning. She’s not even that appealing a character!”

“These weird host and hostess costumes and odd equipment they are obsessed with are so out of date it is not funny any more! I’m getting truly sick of their mixed medieval high-tech worlds too!”

“The whole game premise is just awful.”

“It will just be another long linear story though.”

“Maybe they could beat Skyrim with the battle system, at least.”

“They could surely beat it in terms of CTDs!”

“Square Enix is hopeless, they long since forgot they could succeed going their own way.”

“Square Enix is just done for.”

“It really says it all that even now they are saying they can compete with Skyrim.”

“It is odd that they are so obsessed with Skyrim at all really.”

“It carried off everything they ever wanted to do, I guess. Now they are just deluding themselves that they can beat it if they try.”

“God knows why they are trying to do this with another continuation of XIII. They shouldn’t even be trying this with the FF brand.”

“This lot probably don’t want to do anything like TES at all. They are just crazy about the way JRPGs have been reduced to a global laughing stock and even Japanese gamers are united in adoration of Skyrim.”

“That’s mostly because you can mod it to the gills though. Japanese game companies would just bitch about copyright or some nonsense and never allow it, so they have no chance there.”

“The fact that it took them this long to even accept just the notion of an open-field in an FF game is proof of just how empty their heads are now.”

To be honest, I’m not even bothered with the increase to Lightning’s bust; some women have larger chest than others, and people all have their preferences when it comes to breast size. As long as you’re faithful to the character, it doesn’t really phase me. A small increase doesn’t make Lightning look that much different anyways.

My beef with this entire situation is the fact that Square Enix is trying so desperately trying to take advantage of the horny fans who will buy this game to dress up their favorite (and honestly, uninteresting) Final Fantasy character. Final Fantasy used to be a huge part of the RPG library with its exceptional gameplay and metric fucktons of lovable characters. With Square Enix milking Lightning’s tits for all they can, you just have to wonder when Square’s wild ride will end and if Final Fantasy will ever be a respectable series again. The Final Fantasy XIII games were not received that well by fans overall due to its linear gameplay done wrong and ridiculous art designs, and it’s overstaying its welcome at this point. Maybe Final Fantasy XV will save the series as everyone’s hoping for.

    • Because Nomura is out of touch with everything. Either make a traditional Final Fantasy or just stop; there’s no real middle ground option for him now.

  1. I haven’t played a single Final Fantasy since 10, and I haven’t seen much to convince me to come back to the series.

I guess you have to give the ‘horny fanboy’ strategy some credit, though, this redesigned Lightning turned me on enough that I considered buying the game. Just for a moment, though–I haven’t been interested in Final Fantasy since 10, and one hot character isn’t enough to win me back. Still, sex sells…being ‘respectable’ isn’t as important as being profitable, as much as I wish it was. There are plenty of guys hornier than me out there; the new Lightning might attract enough of them to make the game a success no matter how much it pales in comparison to Skyrim.

    • It’s sad that people can’t just play games for the game and everything has to be some kind of wank fest. It really grinds my gears.

And I’d recommend at least considering Final Fantasy 12; it’s a very fun game with an interesting battle system. Not considering 11 and 14 since they are MMOs, it’s the best one after 10. Granted it’s only competition would be Final Fantasy 13, it still holds out as a solid title.
