“Mario Kart 8 has DLC?’ Well, I guess so, because a few guest stars from the Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing are coming to the Nintendo eShop. According to Nintendo UK, two eShop bundles of downloadable content are coming in the near future.
The first pack includes Link straight out of Skyward Sword, Tanooki Suit Mario, and Cat Suit Peach along with the Blue Falcon and an F-Zero inspired racetrack. The F-Zero track is only one of eight tracks in this pack, and considering that Mario Kart 8 only had 16 (fun as hell) tracks, that’s a lot of new courses to race on. And let’s be honest with ourselves here; with the anti-gravity nature of Mario Kart 8, the F-Zero track was bound to happen.
The second pack includes the Villager and Isabelle from Animal Crossing and Dry Bones Bowser along with eight additional courses. With each DLC pack containing 8 tracks, buying them both doubles the amount of courses you can play up to 32 tracks.
I’m not sure how I feel about Nintendo offering DLC these days. Sure, they did it with games like Fire Emblem: Awakening, but they gave away free DLC for the first month or so after its release, which has to get them a little something. I’m not a big fan of DLC in general, be it Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo DLC, but taking out company names, Mario Kart 8 is still a great game by itself. The DLC seems like it adds a metric shit ton of content along with some new racers never before seen in a Mario Kart game, so if DLC is the necessary evil, at least it’s good DLC. Who doesn’t want to see Waluigi in the Blue Falcon anyways?
